The following versions of Office are no longer supported, as of November 2020: Office 2016 for Mac received security updates until October 13, 2020. Mainstream support ended on that date. Unlike Office 2016 for Windows, it did not receive extended support. That is, if you would rather “own” Office 2016 (or some past or future version of the Office desktop applications) than pay monthly or annually for a subscription, then things are going to change.

Based on Microsoft’s product lifecycle, ITLA will be upgrading Microsoft Office products older than Office 2013 to Office 2016 on October 17th 2017. ITLA identified approximately 701 computers that will be affected by this upgrade. These upgrades will help protect your computer and data from spyware, viruses, malware, ensure compatibility with new Microsoft software and other applications, your Microsoft Office Suite needs updated to the most current version of Office.

This update can be applied in multiple ways depending on what is most convenient for you.
- The latest version of Office is available via the Software Center application on windows systems, and the Self Service application on Apple systems. The Software Center and Self Service applications permit you to upgrade your Microsoft Office applications at your convenience prior to October 17, 2017. For more information about the system changes and how to utilize Software Center or Self Service, check out our FAQ's at http://it.la.psu.edu/self-help-faqs on our IT website. Here are some steps to get you started –
Windows Systems
- Through the start menu, open the Software Center application (Start - All Apps - Microsoft System Center - Software Center)
- On the left side of the Software Center window, click on the Operating Systems button.
- Click on the install button (you will not be able to work on your computer until the update is complete - up to 120 minutes).

Apple Systems
- Through the Applications window, open the Self Service application (Go – Applications – Self Service)
- On the right side of the window, click on the Install New Software link
- Click on the install button under Microsoft Office 2016
- You are welcome to contact the IT Help Desk (814-865-3412) and we will gladly assist you through the process of updating your Microsoft Office installation on your computer.
- On October 17, 2017, ITLA will push the latest Microsoft Office upgrade to your computer during the regularly scheduled OS updates and security patches.
You will notice changes with the overall look of Office.

ITLA will continue to make new Office Suite releases and patches available via Software Center. This enables our customers to install the updates at their convenience. We will continue to notify the CLA community of any other changes as Microsoft announces them.
Please note: Office 2013 is currently supported until April of 2018. Office 2013 is not part of the office upgrades being pushed on October 17th 2017.

What is the Microsoft Lifecycle Policy for Microsoft 365 and Office products?
The Office 365 and Microsoft 365 suite of services, along with Microsoft 365 Apps, is governed by the Modern Lifecycle Policy.
On April 21, 2020, we adopted 'Microsoft 365 Apps' for our two Office client subscription products:
- Office 365 ProPlus will become Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise
- Office 365 Business will become Microsoft 365 Apps for business
Also, on that date, we changed the names of our Office 365 small and medium business offerings and many of our consumer offerings:
- Office 365 Business Essentials will become Microsoft 365 Business Basic
- Office 365 Business Premium will become Microsoft 365 Business Standard
- Microsoft 365 Business will become Microsoft 365 Business Premium
- Office 365 Home will become Microsoft 365 Family
- Office 365 Personal will become Microsoft 365 Personal
- Office 365 Solo will become Microsoft 365 Personal
- Office 365 Services will become Microsoft 365 Personal
- Office 365 University will become Microsoft 365 Personal
- Office 365 Home (for military) will become Microsoft 365 Family
There are no naming changes for Office 365 Enterprise, Government, and Education editions and Microsoft 365 Enterprise, Government, and Education editions.
Other Office on-premises products are governed by the Fixed Lifecycle Policy. Search for a specific Office product to see its corresponding Lifecycle Policy and end-of-support dates.
For Office 2019, Microsoft will provide 5 years of mainstream support with 2 years of extended support as an exception to the 10-year Fixed-Lifecycle Policy term. This 7-year term will align with the support period for Office 2016.
Will Office 365 and Microsoft 365 run in any browser?

Please note, beginning August 17, 2021, Microsoft 365 apps and services will no longer support Internet Explorer (IE) 11. Additionally, Microsoft Teams will no longersupport IE 11 beginning November 30, 2020. Go here to learn more.
